Technology changes every day. However, there are 10 tech trends in particular that business leaders need to be prepared for in 2023. Keep reading to find out what they are.

Artificial Intelligence is everywhere

By 2023, Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be an organisation's standard feature. With its user-friendly drag-and-drop interfaces, no-code AI will enable businesses to make use of its capabilities to create more intelligent services and products. This is already evident in the retail sector, where contactless and autonomous shopping and delivery are becoming increasingly popular.

AI will make it simpler for customers to purchase and receive goods and services. Additionally, AI will be integrated into almost every job and business process across industries. Retailers will increasingly use AI to manage and automate their complex inventory management processes, making convenience trends such as BOPAC (buy-online-pickup-at-curbside), BOPIS (buy-online-pickup-in-store), and BORIS (buy-online-return-in-store) the normal.

AI will also be the driving force behind the autonomous delivery initiatives that retailers are testing and launching, meaning that retail workers will need to become accustomed to working with machines to do their jobs.

The relationship between digital & physical worlds will strengthen

In 2023, the relationship between digital and physical worlds will continue to be strengthened by a combination of digital twin technology and 3D printing. Designers and engineers can use virtual simulations of real-world processes, operations, or products to test new ideas in a safe environment without incurring high costs. This data can then be used to tweak components in the virtual world before they are produced using 3D printing technology.

The Metaverse will expand rapidly

Did you know it is predicted that by 2030 the Metaverse will add $5 trillion to the economy globally? However, the direction of the Metaverse will be defined this year. In 2023, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) tech will advance continuously.

Predictions for 2023:

  • In 2023 more immersive meeting environments will be available, so we’re able to communicate, brainstorm, and create collectively. An example of this is Microsoft and Nvidia, which are already working to develop Metaverse platforms to collaborate digitally on projects.
  • We may see an advance in avatars this year. They could even look exactly like we do and adapt to our unique body language. The plan is for avatars to represent us in the Metaverse (even if we’re not logged in!).
  • The trend of companies using AR and VR to conduct onboarding and training will accelerate this year.

Blockchain tech will significantly advance

In 2023, we can expect to see blockchain technology become more widespread and useful. Decentralized products and services will be developed, allowing for secure data storage that is encrypted using blockchain.

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) will also become increasingly practical, potentially granting access to exclusive experiences or acting as keys for digital products and services. Moreover, these NFTs could represent contracts between parties.

Robots may become more human

By 2023, robots will be even more human-like in both their physical appearance and capabilities. These robots can be utilised as event greeters, bartenders, concierges, and companions for seniors. Additionally, they can perform more complex tasks, such as those found in warehouses and factories, while working closely with humans. One company is developing a humanoid robot that could soon be available to work inside our homes. At Tesla AI Day in September 2022, Elon Musk revealed two Optimus robotic prototypes, which he claimed would be ready to take orders within 3-5 years. This robot can do simple chores like picking objects up or watering plants - so soon, we may find ourselves having "robot butlers" aiding us at home!

Tech will be more sustainable

In 2023, there will be a significant push toward more sustainable technology. As people become increasingly aware of where their favourite gadgets come from and the energy that powers cloud services like Netflix and Spotify, they will demand transparency in supply chains to ensure that the products and services they invest in are efficient and environmentally friendly. This shift towards sustainability is an important step for the future of our planet.

By 2023, expect to see advancements in green hydrogen and decentralized power grids. Shell and RWE are leading the way with their development of a major pipeline from wind plants in the North Sea. This renewable energy source produces close to no greenhouse gas emissions and has the potential to revolutionize how we generate electricity. Decentralized power generation also offers a more equitable system by allowing communities or individual households to produce their own energy even when main grids are not available. These initiatives could have far-reaching impacts, reducing carbon emissions while empowering people around the world with access to clean energy sources.

Making progress in creating autonomous systems

Business executives will press ahead with the development of autonomous systems, particularly in delivery and logistics. Numerous warehouses and factories already have some form of automation installed. By 2023, more self-driving trucks and vessels, as well as delivery robots, will be operational, while an increasing number of warehouses and factories are expected to employ automated technology. Additionally, AI is used to place the most sought-after items close by for easier access by these robots. The company is now extending this successful autonomous system from their warehouse to other retailers within their sector.

Progress in quantum computing

Quantum computing leverages subatomic particles to generate novel methods of processing and storing data, is an advanced technology that could deliver computers with trillion-times faster performance than the most powerful traditional processors at present.
The primary risk associated with quantum computing is that it may render our existing encryption techniques ineffective — thus any nation successfully advancing quantum computing on a large scale would be able to break through the encryption of other nations, companies, security systems and more. This will likely become a major issue in 2023 as countries such as the US, UK, China and Russia invest heavily into developing quantum computing technologies.

Gene editing technology

We can make alterations to materials, plants, and even humans through editing in the world we live in. Nanotechnology is allowing us to generate substances with unprecedented properties, such as water repellence and self-healing abilities. CRISPR-Cas9 has already been available for some time, but by 2023 it will have advanced significantly in its capacity to “reshape nature” via DNA modifications. Gene editing works almost like word processing - you can remove certain words or phrases and add new ones - except with genes instead of words. This technology can be utilized to address genetic mutations, eradicate food allergies, enhance crop health, or even change human characteristics like eye colour or hair hue.
